Social media freelancer or agency in Mauritius: which to choose?

Guides

You want to hand over your social media, but to whom? A freelance social media manager and a social media agency in Mauritius don't offer the same thing. This guide compares the two honestly, so you can choose for your own situation. We are an agency, and we'll also tell you when a freelancer is the better pick.

Two models, two cost structures

A freelancer works alone. Overheads are low, and you mostly pay for their time. An agency brings together a team, equipment and coordination: its fee covers several skills at once.

So comparing two prices isn't enough. Compare what's included. If your freelancer posts and answers messages but doesn't film, you'll pay separately for a videographer, a photographer or a designer. Add it all up before you decide.

Look at the commitment too, and at how you can stop. Freelancers are often more flexible on that front. Agencies tend to offer structured packages, with the content set out in advance. Neither is better in itself: it depends on what you need each month.

Skills: one person or a whole team

Running social media well takes several different skills. A freelancer is often strong in one or two of them. An agency spreads the work across different people. The risk with one person doing everything: polished videos but rough design, or beautiful visuals with no strategy behind them.

These are the skills you need covered, whichever option you choose:

  • Strategy and content ideas
  • Photography
  • Videography and video editing
  • Graphic design
  • Community management: posting, replies, engagement
  • Reporting and analysis

Continuity: what happens when someone is away?

With a freelancer, everything rests on one person. An illness, a holiday or a bigger client, and your page goes quiet. In an agency, someone else picks it up.

Agencies have their own risks: your account can be passed from hand to hand, or get lost among many others. Ask who will actually work on your account.

Either way, keep ownership of your accounts, your admin access and your files. If you change providers, you leave with everything.

Reporting: knowing what you're paying for

A good provider shows you regular numbers: views, comments, shares, messages received. But a table of numbers isn't enough. The report should say what worked, what didn't and what changes next week. Be wary of reports that only talk about follower counts: a follower who never watches your videos brings you nothing.

That's the Kaizen idea of continuous improvement: produce, measure, improve, every week. A format that works gets more variations, a format that falls flat gets replaced.

Questions to ask before hiring a social media manager in Mauritius

Ask a freelancer and an agency the same questions. The answers will tell you more than any pitch:

  • Can you show me real, checkable results on public accounts?
  • Who produces the photos and videos?
  • Who works on my account, and who covers when they're away?
  • Which platforms, and how many posts a week?
  • How often will I get a report, and what will it contain?
  • What do you change when a post doesn't work?
  • Do the accounts, access and files stay in my name?
  • What's included, and what will be billed on top?
  • How long is the commitment, and how do I stop?

When a freelancer is the better choice

A good freelancer is often the right answer if you run just one platform, if you already produce your own photos and videos, or if you mainly need someone to post and reply. The same goes when you already know a reliable person whose work you've seen.

A freelancer also suits one-off, well-defined jobs where a full team would be overkill.

In that case, pick them on their results, not their rate. Ask to see accounts they've run for several months, and check that they post consistently.

When a social media agency is the better choice

An agency comes out ahead when you need strategy, photos, videos, design and several platforms managed all at once, with nobody in-house to coordinate it. It also matters when continuity and regular reporting are essential.

Agence Kaizen, in Curepipe, brings these skills under one roof and works with more than 40 clients. The Fully Advanced covers strategic planning, content ideas, 2 videos, 4 photo or design posts and community management on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. If someone on your side already posts, The Content Creation brings 4 videos.
